Introduction

This website presents a comparative study of two engaging animal texts, Wandi by Favel Parret (2021) and the interactive digital story app Pink Rhino: Kids Animal Story. Both texts centre on animals yet they employ different communicative resources and textual repertoires to connect with young audiences and explore meaningful themes.

Wandi

Wandi is a children's novel based on the true story of a dingo pup found in a backyard in Victoria Australia after being dropped by an eagle (Wandi, ABC news 2021).

Through descriptive language, illustrations, and a strong narrative voice, Parrot captures Wandi's journey of survival, and conservation.

The book's purpose is not only to entertain audiences, targeting specifically the Upper primary and lower secondary readers (ages 8–14), but to raise awareness about the significance of dingoes in Australian ecosystems and the threats they face.

Pink Rhino: Kids Animal Story

Pink Rhino: Kids Animal Story, is an interactive digital story designed for Early childhood and lower primary learners (ages 3–7).

Designed as an app, it uses multimodal resources such as animation, sound effects, music, and interactive touch features to immerse children in the story.

The story's purpose is to introduce wildlife conservation concepts in a playful, hands on format, encouraging curiosity and empathy for endangered species.
